The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element holding it together to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.
Matteo's Surprising Return
A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Finding His Natural Fit
It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
