European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
