Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
