Individuals who experienced abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope after their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's choice to meet with them so early in his papacy sent a strong message about his commitment to addressing the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The group is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is resistance," they remarked.

Legacy Challenge

The new Pope, who assumed the role in spring, has inherited this longstanding problem that has haunted the Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to address the situation included an historic meeting on child abuse within the institution and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For Hickey, who uses they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The Canadian advocate shared they were victimized by a priest who was later moved between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to work with him," Hickey stated. "Both sides share the same goal, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Multiple representatives of the coalition, which represents survivors and supporters from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, originally scheduled for a brief period, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a woman victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

Hickey added the Pope was "tender" about their own story and appeared "very humble, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and very open and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is hoping that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted specialists and gathered materials that they will present to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in looking at it," Hickey noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recently released Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also noted that victims consistently emphasized the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they informed the pontiff at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the meeting, Hickey expressed hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a connection and persisting to build that bond is a move in the right direction," Hickey stated.

Hickey concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
